The Bowmore distillery, said to have been founded in 1779 was acquired by William and James Mutter (twins) in 1852 and continued under their management until the early 1890’s, when Bowmore Distillery Co was formed.
This heavy hand blown dark “black glass” squat or “onion shape” bottle, typical of the 19th century features words engraved BOWMORE ISLAY WHISKY and on the reverse “W & J MUTTER’S for JAMES 1890”. This is one of several bottles produced and appears identical in all respects to the bottle currently in the private collection held at the distillery itself.
The driven cork and lead capsule are intact and the level is approximately four centimetres below the cork.
The Bowmore distillery remains in production today, now owned by the Japanese company Suntory, and claims the oldest maturation vault in the world.
